“Oogtegels”
“If I say Willem van Oranje, you say Delft. But did you know he lived in Breda as well? Lately, I've been fascinated by the Nassau legacy and the marks it left on Breda. I think there is an interesting interplay between modern depictions and the historical facts we know about Willem van Oranje. The all-seeing eyes are based on the ‘oogtegels’ found in the Kasteel van Breda. The lines in the background also mimic the outline of this castle. In this artwork, however, the eyes also represent both the modern and the historical viewer, and how they perceive Willem”.
