“Langstraatse Mikkemannen”
“The Mikkeman is a sweet bread roll, traditionally found during the Sinterklaas season in bakeries and supermarkets throughout the Langstraat region. It originated during the rise of the region’s shoe and leather industry, when many families lived in poverty and speculaas figures were too expensive because of the spices used. As an affordable alternative, the Mikkeman was made with simpler, more accessible ingredients like cinnamon and sugar. Originally shaped like a little man, it was placed in children’s shoes as a Sinterklaas gift. Today, it usually takes the shape of a round bun”.
