“Flames from the Past”
“This artwork is inspired by the history of the Anna Ceelen Huis and the women who suffered during the witch-hunts in Asten in 1595. Anna Ceelen was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned in Asten Castle, where she died as a result of torture. Although she was not burned, fire is used in this artwork as a symbol for the intense feelings, pain and suffering, but also as a memory that many did find this fate during the witch-hunts in Brabant. Even though it’s a sad story, I wanted to capture both the beauty and the sadness of the witch-hunts, the controversy, and the healing as a society we had to do afterwards. But also to stand still by the potential lost knowledge, connections and community due to this historical event”.
